Professional Asbestos Testing and Inspection In Edmonton and Calgary

During the mid-century up until 1990, asbestos was a widely used building material popularized because of its flame-retardant and non-combustible elements. Asbestos was regarded as versatile and could strengthen almost anything that it was mixed with. The naturally occurring mineral was commonly used in industrial, residential and commercial buildings. Investigation into the occupational health risks of asbestos-containing materials revealed that inhaling the fibres can cause severe illnesses, including lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis.

For this reason, if you suspect your home might contain asbestos mixed material, you should call a professional asbestos consulting company.

Where Do You Find Asbestos?

Until the 1990s, asbestos was widely used across Canada until the substance became recognized as a hazardous material. Asbestos was often mixed with other materials and therefore is often not easily identifiable.

Common Places To Find Asbestos:

  • Vinyl or Linoleum Floor Tiles – any size tile may possibly contain asbestos
  • Ceiling Tiles
  • Vermiculite Attic Insulation – this type of insulation was used as recently as the early 1990s to insulate chimney walls around chimney liners and attics.
  • Mechanical Insulation – commonly used for heating and mechanical systems such as furnaces, boilers, tanks, wood-burning stoves and ductwork.
  • Textured paints – many decorative finishes on walls seen in older buildings likely contain asbestos.
  • Soundproofing Material – any soundproofing material made before the 1980s contains asbestos.
  • Popcorn Ceilings
  • Roofing Materials
  • Joint Compounds and Patching – drywall mud or drywall taping compound often contains asbestos.
  • Cement Boards and Tiles – often located on the outside of buildings used as wall coverings or roofs.
  • Spray Foam Fire Proofing – this is found in structural supports like beams and columns for added fire resistance.
